Some really cracking racing at our BSCRA Area 8 Round on Sunday 8th January!

Things got off to a quick start with the Production 'warm-up' race as Lee Parsons trounced all the Super Prods to win with one of Mr BSP's Falcon Productions with a new track Falcon Production Record of 47.30 on White lane.

Brian Saunders himself then managed to win Saloon with his brand new BSP/Paulo Castriconi chassis, but our very own Ian Barker upheld the Club's honour by very convincingly taking both F1 and Sports.
Very notable that all our visitors have pretty much got the hang of our short circuit now - and no complaints were heard!

For anyone trying to find our new Race Calendar on the website - don't panic! The Club is alive and well and just waiting for our Webmaster to post it!! (in case he reads this - that is a BIG hint!)

Here is a taster of this month, January is free from Championship Rounds so is the ideal time to prepare yourself for what is to come.

AGM

Shame that so few Members use this Blog, but here is a reminder that the date of our Annual General Meeting is fast approaching - Thursday 2nd December!

Often taken to be a mere formality but it is the democratic opportunity to decide the Club's direction for next year and how you - the members, want the Club to be run. Remember too that our Club is not run by any one person, but by an elected committee.

Make a note of the date and be there!

After nearly 3 weeks of hard work, our refurbished track is almost ready to go!
Certainly looks nice and clean - and clearly marked too.
A few more finishing touches, a good spray gooping, and we are back in business with racing as usual next Thursday 26th - sports class as per the race calendar.

The basic painting is more or less done and work now under way with all the detailing.
This is the slow bit and we are not likely to meet our first deadline but it will definately all be done for Thursday 26th! See you all there!

TRACK RE-PAINTING!

Our Track is now over 10 years old and the long planned Track re-painting is underway on schedule!

There will be no racing for at least the next couple of weeks but the Club will be open as usual on Thursday evenings for anyone to pop in and check on progress - or even do some work!
For a change, socialising will take precedence over racing!

If all goes according to plan, we should be back in business on Thursday 19th August.
If not..................., by Thursday 26th at the latest.

Those who have offered to help know exactly what is involved!

NATIONAL TEAM RACE

The National Club Team Race was held at the Haynes Motor Museum on Sunday the 11th and we didn't disgrace ourselves to finish 3rd behind Luton and North London.

No doubt at all that our Team of Ian B, Jody, Ben and Stuart were quite capable of winning but luck didn't go our way again this time. It would have been very nice to win but there is no shame at all in a 3rd place when you consider the clubs and drivers that we did beat!

Proof again that Roedale is as good as any BSCRA Club!!

Next year, perhaps?

By the way, the Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil, is well worth a visit if you are ever down that way.

SOUTHERN 32 at Roedale!

CLUB VISITS!

We are hosting a visit to the Club by a group of youngsters from the Sussex Community Youth Project on Wednesday 12th May.
This was arranged a long time ago, but since then a number of our 'child friendly' members have dropped out for one reason or another and we need a bit of assistance on the night.

These visits are important in promoting the Club - and the sport in general, but can only go ahead with the co-operation of our membership.
A couple of hours on Wednesday 12th May from 7.00 pm.

Change to Race Calendar!

The programme for Thursday April 29th will be swopped with the following week Thursday May 6th (erroneously shown as May 1st!).
April 29, preceeding the Nationals, will now be 1/24 Production and May 6 Sports Championship.

Those carrying the Club flag to Blackpool had better benefit from this!!

Southern 32 2010

Can I recommend to all Roedale members the excellent Southern 32 Series. There are 12 races throughout 2010, with your best 6 counting towards the championship. Phil Hemsley, Ian Barker and myself have participated in this very enjoyable series this year and if you fancy a little competitive racing at other clubs, this is an excellent way to start.

The mornings racing is on an individual basis using either Super Production, or Falcon powered Production cars. It consists of 4 heats followed by a final. In the afternoon, there is a team race using Gp12 Saloon Chassis cars, with a Le Mans shell. This is a two man team race, and even if you don't have a team mate, there is always someone looking for a partner.

Entry is £5 for the morning racing, and another £5 if you do the team race. Phil and myself try to do the 8 closest races to Brighton and we are happy to give a lift to anyone who would like to give it a try. Our first race will be at the North London Club on Sunday 21st March. There is also a prize for the Club which fields the greatest number of drivers during the year, Roedale has won this in the past although Bournemouth beat us this year.

I suppose it's about time that someone publicly congratulated our Team for their excellent result in the National team race last weekend!

Our Team of Ian B (Herr Kapitan), Ben, Jody and John finished a very creditable Second - only 18 laps behind that damn North London team! So nearly!

Well done chaps - and it proves that you don't have to have a big home track to be good drivers!

Brighton Centre 2010

It was pleasing to see that 12 Roedale club members saw fit to vote in favour of attending the Brighton Centre next February, this is a fine level of support. These votes in favour now need to be turned into positive attendance and support during the three days.

It takes a minimum of 6 members to run the track, and this does not include refreshment breaks, wandering round the exhibition or going to the loo. As the event runs for 3 days, the minimum number of member days required to run the stand will be 18.

With 12 members having voted in favour of supporting the event, they will need to be there for at least a day and a half minimum to actually cover the event. However, if we factor in refreshment breaks, loo breaks and wandering round the exhibition, in practical terms, each member needs to attend for a minimum of 2 days.

Chris has posted the dates of the event, and I would suggest that everybody, starts to plan which days they will cover, and lets Chris know in good time so coverage can be worked out for the 3 days. Remember, if you voted in favour of attendance, you need to actually give the minimum required level of support!

I appreciate Friday can be a difficult day as many club members are at work but some members have actually taken the trouble to book a days holiday in order to attend on the Friday. I am sure that some of the retired members would be happy to cover Friday providing others do their fair share on Saturday and Sunday.

Last year, on many occasions, we only had the bare minimum of 6 on the stand and occasionally even less! Let's not hear Chris having to ask, "where's everybody gone?" in 2010. Finally just to re-iterate, if you were one of the 12 in favour, you need to put in 2 days minimum.

BRIGHTON MODEL WORLD SHOW 2010

A reminder to all members to note the date of next year's Model World Show!
February 12 - 14 inclusive.
It doesn't really take much effort to devote a weekend to your Club once a year - and even take a day off work on the Friday. I won't mention help for the preparation and setting up!!

For the record, this will be our 32nd consecutive year at this show in which will be our 45th anniversary as a Club year - 2010!

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS...................!

In the absence of any recent race results postings on our website (hint to the acting webmaster!!!), here's an update on how the Club Championships are going so far this year.

2 rounds have been completed in each class now, with 4 rounds still to go - and don't forget only the best 4 results count!
Ian B isn't having everything his own way so far this year although there are signs that he is likely to dominate once again in most areas.
In Sports and Super Production he is looking good for the titles but is not having it all his own way in Saloon where Jody is the challenger with Phil H and Chris C close behind. Phil H is the surprise firm favourite in F1 while Stuart (despite all his moans) comfortably leads the Club Production class for the Reg Church Memorial Trophy, and is pretty much tied with Ian B in 1/24 Production.

Long way to go yet but it would be nice to see different names on the trophy boards and I can save money by not buying that rubber 'Beaker' stamp!

F1 Championship - Round 2

All,

As you may be aware there was a problem with our race control computer last night which unfortunately meant the racesheet and results were lost.

Regrettably this means that last nights race has been declared null and void and will be rescheduled for later in the year. Whilst this will be dissapointing for some, I'm sure you will agree that a lack of accurate results are only likely to lead to disputes later in the year around championship positions and this is the most sensible course of action.

Fortunately we generally have a very reliable system so I am sure that this will be a one off.

I thought as i left the club last night that finding out what the correct definition of wire is would help you settle your "Rules" arguement. I myself am not bothered either way if plastic or a metal front axle is used as my 1/24th car is wickedly fast enough for me anyway! But - the english oxford dictionary states this:

Don't know if Scouts do that Dib, Dib, Dib stuff any more but a reminder that we have Scout Groups visiting The Club over the next three weeks!
Each visit is on a Tuesday evening and a bit of help from members is always welcome.

A Champion end of another year!

Club Championships are over - no less than FIVE of the classes going to Ian Barker, leaving just F1 to Phil Moss and the Junior Class to Elliott Watson. Unsurprisingly, Ian won the Victor Ludorum Trophy too!!

Our AGM came and went without too much change!
In fact - no significant changes at all! Just a few amendments to tighten up the 'standardness' of our Club Production Class and clarification of the qualifying rules for our Championships.
The Club remains in a healthy position despite the global recession, and the same old Committee got re-elected for yet another year.

Here's hoping that 2009 will be another good year - and maybe we can look forward to that Slot Stox track!

Best place to make a public announcement about what's happening in the Club - or is it?

Last round of the Reg Church Trophy this coming Thursday and it has to be time for the last run in the reverse direction. (who proposed that half the rounds should go in reverse??)
Track has been cleaned off too!

At a best guess, five of our number will know this......................?

By the way Robin, Race-A-Way scalextric appears to be up for sale, get a mortgage on that instead and think how much HO track you could get in there!

Wouldn't you know it!

There i was trying to pull the 6 toothed pinion abit further back up the shaft (yes,i has pushed it down to far towards the can bearing and was trying to correct my mistake using a razor blade, pliers and soldering iron) and then my fingers turned to the finest butter and off the motor went down to the loft floor ,and just to rub salt in the wounds, down the only bloody nook and cranny there is and dove under the loft floor boards never to be seen again!!!! So if you buy my flat there's a slot car goody awaiting you.

I've come to terms with the fact i hate soldering pinions and motors with a passion. Also gear meshing is another weakness unless its a falcon motor with a 11/10 tooth pinion and a 36/38 toothed gear then it seems impossible to get it wrong.

Thought you lot might enjoy this post at my expense.

Just been looking at the Retro race report at Netley.
And came over all nostalgic.

Lights,Camera and "TRACK!" calls

Hello Gentlemen

I post this only because Phil has goaded me with a request for another "controversial" subject, im so easily goaded!

Now an idea that i think would attract members to the club/increase awareness of our interest would be to have a simple link on the Home page, or atleast within the website, that directs you to a short video that actually shows what we do at the club. The pictures on the website are good (Although i reckon we could maybe update them with some new ones e.g. new pictures of latest chassis's with motors and some more of the fancier looking bodies on the "members/racers cars exposed" section and show more of an age range of people racing in the other areas) but a video, tastefully done, would show others what the club is like e.g. interior of the building, the track, race control, pit area and most importantly the racing itself. Im sure between us all someone has a good digital video camera (Even mobiles phones have them now) and a simple editing suite progam (I think windows xp as one as standard) that we could use to produce something informative and worth while.

As always i welcome your comments, no rude ones please!

Well after a lot of work over the last six months United Airlines and Air New Zealand are now fully relocated to Terminal 1 ( as of 3rd July ). Only another 52 airlines left to move!!!

Now I know that's not of huge interest to everyone, but it does mean I've now got a bit of my life back again. As a result all of the missing results since 5th June are now available through the Roedale Calendar page.

Not much happening on the blog these days - come on Robin, must be time for another controversial topic!

Very good answer!

In actual fact, until quite recently most clubs did have only a single common power supply - and many still do have. This was no doubt derived from the good old days of battery power. Yes, I know, during the war...............................!

BSCRA rules require a minimum of 18Amps per lane which means in effect that you would need at least a single 80A supply, or alternatively, 4 x 20A supplies, to satisfy the serious side of life. This wouldn't matter at all for a home track running Falcons (or HO come to that!). The Club portable track uses a single 30A power supply but that struggles with four Gp.12's!
You should certainly aim for at least 25A - particularly as you are likely to want to track test your quicker cars.

As to who supplies the Club's electricity - no idea! We pay the landlord so unless you can get us a good discount, does it matter much?

Hello chaps

Ok this might seem like a stupid question but im gonna ask any way? If you had a four lane track requiring 3 amps per lane could you use a a single 25amp power supply (like we use at the club) set to an output of 12amps and then have one connection per lane coming off it? If so , would there be a surge of power to any cars remaining on the track if say one car de-sloted and wasn't drawing electricity? Would it be better to have 4 individual 10amp power supplies even though its more costly?

All answer welcome as my electrical knowledge is limited!

Its 5.30am and the alarm goes off,i drag myself from my nice warm bed to go and pick up robin then a short trip up the road to collect Chris c, the m23 and m25 are nice and clear so no hold ups while on the way to Vodaphones HQ at newbury. At just a little past 8am we arrive at Vodaphones HQ and not a minute too soon for Chris c!!!!.
Chris, robin and myself get settled in and find a clear pit table for the day, a short while later Malcolm turns in and the four of us are set for the day. Now my plan was to help robin and Malcolm with any dramas they may have with there cars during the days racing, so i settle myself in and find all the items that i might need for rapid car repairs. Following a call to make sure all the novice drivers are booked in i half jokingly ask Chris to go and book me in only to be told 10 minutes later to go and talk to Kev gray as he would like a word with me! £20 lighter and with not much time to spare i am frantically trying to sort out my 3 year old falcon 4 powered demon chassis, i get myself in a muddle with my tyres so end up putting the old ones back on again just minutes before my first practice session. After the first rather slippery! practice session i can see that i am not completely outclassed with my car, a few more practice sessions pass and i start to remember how to drive the Nat's track and feel the nerves starting to settle a little more.
The qualifying format is 4 segmented runs followed by by a receding then the next 4 segmented runs. after the first 4 runs i am in the top 10 overall but i have a real problem with the car as it is starting to slow very rapidly.Then in steps one of the many hero's of the day for me Ian b, he rather stupidly tells me that i should put a falcon 7 in for the next round of qualifying, so after all of 2 seconds though i ask him if he thinks he would have time to do it for me, thankfully he says yes and before you know it another of my days hero's, Chris c, is of and procuring me a falcon 7 from Chas. I am off marshaling the next set of heats while Ian wrestles,as its soldered in in about 5 places!!!, the falcon 4 from my demon chassis to replace it with my shiny new falcon 7. Ian has the new motor in place after what seems no time at all and following chas's advice the motor is oiled and run in for as long as possible before the the next round of qualifying.
New tyres are fitted, new braids courtesy of Malcolm are fitted and of i go again for my next 4 qualifying runs, this time i struggle to drive the car with its new found urgency from the falcon 7, on the last run disaster strikes, i get the same corner wrong for about the 20th time and fall into the next lane just as that driver enters the main straight! my car takes off flat out, it then clatters full chat of the barrier and ends up, still traveling at abated speed, the wrong way up the main straight, thankfully its not collected by anything other than a marshall. But its soon apparent that all is not well. I turns out that my 2 piece cranked axle set up has parted company with the solder that was holding it there, time for rapid rebuild number 2 of the day.
Robin runs off to buy me some mickey mouse front wheels, i think Chris 'borrows' a length of piano wire from somebody and Ian finds somebody to cut it down to size, during this the organisers are asking people to choose there starting lanes so i ask Chris to go and choose for me to give me time to finish the repairs/preparations to my car.
So after all that there i am in the Nat's novice final along with fellow roedale team mate Malcolm, unfortunately robins driving miss daisy impression was not good enough to get him into the final, not too sure what happened next as it all whizzed by in a bit of a blur. I do remember that Chris managed to put the wrong sticker on my car during one lane change and then on the next one managed to put it on the track facing the wrong way!! but both times the mistake was spotted and solved. I ran as high as second at one stage but as the final progressed i settled mid pack and ended up finishing 5 overall with Malcolm finishing in 8th.
It only took me twenty years of slot racing to get to the nationals but i am sure i will be there for saloon next year, and i would like to say a very big thanks to everybody that helped me out.
One last thing, ask Chris about the photo of robin!!!!

Jared set me a challenge this weekend, as he had decided he wanted to make a remote control tank as part of a World War Two project for school. Not one to be beaten I set to dismantling the collection of broken radio control helicopters I collected at the Brighton Centre. I soon found that the motor and pinion meshed perfectly with a 46t 80 pitch gear, so with my trusty soldering iron, some 16g piano wire, Jared's tank was soon underway. Once constructed all we needed to do was create a 'tank' from an old box and the job was nearly complete ! ( you know bodywork has never been my strength ! )

You can see we even used pin tube to mount the shell to the chassis !

Under the covers you can see the size of the motor and the backend. For the technically minded this is a 7 to 46 gear ratio! Initially built with a set of 1/24th JKB rears (on large polymers of course !), however, these seemed to provide to much resistance and cut the motor out, a little experimentation found it ran best with a gear on each side.

As you can see in the attached video, it's got a good turn of speed ! Wonder if I could get a saloon body on it - great fun !!!

Chris Church did say he thought the blog was going abit quiet and was in need of a possible contraversial subject. I don't like to disappoint so here it is:

Whats the general opinion of POSSIBLY inviting the EAHORC to the club for one Sunday later in the year? Or maybe later next year?

If you look on the BSCRA website site you can see they've been to FLBT in Swindon and brought their own track and placed it over the top of the exisiting 1/32 track. I believe that we (well i will atleast) should remain open to other scale racing and use this an a FUN insight into HO racing (Even if you do see them as toys)

Slot cars in the caribbean!

Hi everyone,

I was on the Caribbean island of St Maartin yesterday, walking along the boardwalk by the beach and a sign outside a yellow shack catches my eye: Slot Car Raceway. Intrigued I walked up the steps and into the door and what the hell, a pukka slot car track! A Paul Ogilvie at that too. It is a copy of the "Indy" track at Millstream.

Got talking to the owner, a Reggie Coran, who has been racing slot cars internationally for years and counts Kimo Ratner and Ernie Mossetti as close friends(!). Any one of you heard of a Reggie Coran? He showed me his trophies for all the things that he has won.

I did take a couple of pictures, soon as I can I'll get them posted up and a link put in for them, but those who have been to Millstream know what the track looks like. It was just so odd to find it in the Caribbean!

He has a shop full of stuff too, and as the Dollar is so weak against the Pound I might just buy some bits! Our itenery takes us back there in 3 weeks, I'm going to see him again and have a go on the track. If I'd known he was there I would have got my cars sent over!

Anyhow, I'll be back in England on 24th April, which is a Thursday, but I probably wont be at club until the week after.

Well done and thanks to all Members who came along to contribute in some way to our stand.
Very pleasing that 18 of our active Members etc showed up over the long weekend - plus Vince from Coulsdon.

Disappointing though was the low numbers that actually had a go on the track. The lowest number since 1995!
90% of them were only knee high and there was virtually no serious interest out there at all.

Oh well...............................!

The steel track is very Grand Designs i thought. Anyone got any idea's how it was made or works ?

Pro 3 Controller

Last time I was down the club, some of you will have seen my Pro 3 Controller where the wiper had worn through the circuit board.

I managed to get hold of some contact details for the chap that manufactured these in the Czech Republic who was happy to repair it for me so I duly packaged it up and sent it off.

I've just had an email back advising me that my Pro 3 is not genuine ( that probably explains why the wiper wasn't a carbon brush ), furthermore the fake mounts the resistor blocks differently so even if the circuit board is replaced it probably won't work with my resistors.

Feeling a bit hacked off !!

Anyway the key message here is Buyer Beware. This was bought from one of the leading suppliers ( I'll try and work out which one it was ) and to be honest I'm a bit surprised to say the least.

(Should also mention that this was bought in 2004 and not recently)

Our Club Championships are over for another season - Ian B doing most of the winning in Sports, Saloon, 1/24 Production and Reg Church Trophy (1/32 Production) and, naturally, the Victor Ludorum!

Phil M managed to keep F1 away from him and Chairman Bill took the controversial Super Production handicap.

Simon T held on to the Junior Championship in his last year as a junior.

Congrats to the winners, commiserations to those who didn't!

Group 12 motor science!

Hello Gentlemen

As always racers i have a questions Recently changed the motor shunts on my group 12 motor, put new brushes on and put a 9 volt (the rectangle type) up to the braids for power and no go from the motor? Now is this because a 9 volt battery is not strong enough to turn the motor? The battery works on a falcon powered car but i gather thats because its very low powered.

Please advise gents.

Found this on a forum at lunch time today,

Dear Agony Aunt,

I've never written to you before, but i really need you advise.

I have suspected for sometime now that my wife has been having an affair.

The usual signs; phone rings but if answer the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the 'girls' a lot recently although when i ask there names she always says, "just some friends from work, you don't know them"

I always try to stay awake to look out for her coming home, but i usually fall asleep.

Anyway, i have never broached the subject with my wife as i think deep down i just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and i decided to really check on her.

Around midnight i hid in the garage behind my slot box so i could get a good view of the whole street when she arrived home after her night out with the 'girls'

When she got out of the car she was buttoning up her blouse, which was open, and she took her knickers out of her bag and slipped them on.

It was at that moment, crouching behind my slot box on the work bench, that i noticed that the end bell on my cobalt g7 motor had a hairline crack in it.

Is this something i could fix myself or should i return it to koford for them to fix?

A trully impressive slot car track (i know, i know, its a dreaded scalextric's). Although do watch for the scene where he makes his daughter kiss the slot car before putting it back in the display case? Beats cleaning the braids with lighter fluid!
